UPDATED INFO:

Team Midwest Showcase Team Headed to Dallas Texas
The organizers of America’s Showcase in St. Louis have cancelled the event for April
18-22. The Midwest Affiliate has sent a team to represent our region to this event for
the past several years. We will still have a showcase team this spring, we just have to
drive a bit further.
The Showcase event for this year will be in Dallas Texas on April 12-14. Try outs will
still be held in Ames on March 9th and 10th, with an alternate date of March 16th and
17th. Please contact Jessica Hurd if you can not attend the first try out date. She can be
reached at iahurds@msn.com or 563-676-4620. All players interested must complete
the registration form so we can plan accordingly. Coaches will select 20 players to
represent our region in Dallas and play five games in front of college and junior scouts.
The bus will depart Des Moines on April 11th early in the morning and return Sunday
April 14th after our last game of the day. We will have a driver swap most likely in or
south of Kansas City, and will be able to pick up/drop of players at that location.

The cost for this trip is going to be $1350 per player. This includes tournament
registration fees, ice practices, skate sharpening, tape, team jersey, socks, team
apparel, hotel, transportation, food, and a ticket to see the Dallas Stars play the Seattle
Kraken at 2pm on Saturday April 13th

For information to register your female player, sophomore and above for Girls Team Midwest go to trystatehockey.com.

Tryout Dates: Saturday March 9th and Sunday March 10th

Please plan on attending both dates.  Saturday tryout will be a skills assessment and Sunday try out will be a scrimmage.  If you are unable to make both dates let Jessica know.

 Time:

Saturday March 9th @ 7-9:00PM

Sunday March 10th @ 9-10:30AM

Check-in: Starts one hour before ice time.

Location: Ames Ice Arena (1507 Gateway Hills Park Dr. Ames, IA  50014)
Tryout Fee: $75 per player paid once on Saturday before you are handed a jersey. Payable by cash or Venmo only.  We do not collect money through websites.

Tryouts for Boys Team Midwest, the MAHA’s entry in the 2023 America’s High School Hockey Showcase, is open to all sophomore, junior and senior high school players in the Midwest Affiliate. The Showcase will take place April 18-22 in St. Louis, Missouri. Team Midwest is coached by PK O’Handley and Rick Baker and team managers are Jessica and Mike Hurd.

Be sure to read all the way to the end to understand the full commitment and requirements players are expected to make and complete the following steps.

  1.  Tryout fee is $75 per player payable by cash or Venmo. No checks.
  2.  Download required forms below, fill out and deliver hard copies the day of tryouts.  You can also email copies to iahurds@msn.com.
  3. Please bring a printed copy of your players USAH membership confirmation number or have a screenshot on your phone.  It is the one with the barcode.  It can be found at www.usahockey.com.  Under players and parents select membership, then scroll to request duplicate registration confirmation
  4.  Walk-ins are welcome but we would like you to to submit the online registration form to give us a heads up on how many might come to try outs. You will need your USAH membership number for that form as well.  This information is also needed to register for the tournament.
  5. Check your dates for prom, school musicals, spring sports schedules to see if you have any conflicts with the tournament dates.  Coaches can be flexible about missing practices before the event, but being there for the actual tournament is required.

Tryout fee and forms due before you can enter the locker room!

Team selection will take place March 11th after tryouts. Coaches will meet with each player. If selected, you are expected to pay the $1,200 participation fee the day of tryouts by check or Venmo. This fee is the cost for the entire trip. Transportation, tournament fees, hotel room, food, clothing, practice ice time and entertainment will all be provided for your player out of this fee.

America's Showcase will take place from April 18th – 22th 2024, in St. Louis, MO. The Team Midwest staff is honored to have the opportunity to be involved with the top High School players in the MHSHL. We feel that America's High School Showcase offers players a great opportunity to be exposed to Junior, College and Professional Scouts from throughout the USA and the honor to represent the Midwest in the best High School Hockey event in North America.

It is very important that all players trying out for this team understand the requirements and the commitment they are expected to make. With the short amount of time MHSHL must put this Team together, it is to each player's benefit to cooperate with the Coaching Staff. We would like all players to understand the following points.

Tryouts — Only 4 skaters + a goalie from 1 team can be selected.  THIS IS A SHOWCASE RULE. We must have a minimum of 18 skaters and 2 goalies with a maximum roster of 25.  All players must have played 50% of their games for the season on a MWAHA team.  For example: we can take 4 skaters from the KC Jets and a Jets goalie.  We could also take a KC Stars skater or goalie.

Commitment — If you are selected to be on the team, practice will be held at the Ames Ice Arena (1507 Gateway Hills Park, Ames, IA  50014). Dates TBA.

All commitments to your current team will be over by then (unless your team is participating in the USA Hockey National Championships). It will be impossible to put this team together and make us all proud of our effort without the commitment of each player for the few weeks preceding the America's High School Showcase event. Your commitment during this time is required.

GIRLS TEAM MIDWEST

Girls Team Midwest will be sharing a bus with us this year down to St. Louis and while we are at the tournament.  They stay at a different hotel near the boy’s hotel, so it makes sharing a bus convenient and reduces the cost for all players.  They will have separate tryouts from the boys team and will be coached by Jade Pospeshil and managed by Angela Ploegman.  For more information on this opportunity for girls in our Affliliate please see the separate announcement and register for their tryouts go to tristatehockey.com.

TRANSPORTATION

The teams will be traveling to St. Louis on Wednesday, April 17th, 2023, and returning sometime Monday, April 22nd, depending on how we finish. We contracted with CIT Charters to depart out of Des Moines Iowa and then travel to Kansas City if we have players from this location, and then continue to St. Louis. Parents can take their player home after the last game if they wish.  Coaches would like all players to ride the bus to the tournament to encourage team bonding.  We also have scrimmages planned for the day we arrive with Team North Dakota for both the boys and girls teams.

Oaks and Caps come togeather

The Des Moines Oak Leafs and Des Moines Capitals held the Annual Mitten Toss Thursday, December 21. Donations allowed the teams to collect several large bags of mittens, gloves, socks, and hats to deliver to Central Iowa Shelter & Services. CISS  is committed to providing low-barrier shelter, meals, and support services at no cost to adults experiencing homelessness, while also facilitating their move toward self-sufficiency.

For over 15 years seniors from Des Moines Oak Leafs and the Des Moines Capitals have picked up donations from the ice to give to our community.

Happy Holidays to our hockey family!
