| Dear Hockey Family, It's that time of year again! Hockey season for the Iowa High School Hockey League is nearly upon us. With that, I extend to all the players, parents and fans, my personal welcome to another exciting season of high school hockey. Last year was indeed a memorable one for both the country and the league. The terrorist attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon along with the War in Afghanistan helped us put into perspective those things in our lives that are truly important. We as a nation have come to learn how lucky we are to live in a country that allows us to enjoy sport and celebrate those who participate in it. In our case, it's all about the kids! Our league has had some noteworthy events as well. The IHSHL now boasts probably the best, corporate-quality website in the country. It's complete with real-time State Tournament updates and pages dedicated to each team. VP Roger Kelly has done an unbelievable job and deserves all our gratitude. The "Quad Cities Presidents" are now the "Quad Cities Blues", and the 2001-02 Varsity Season/State Champion Omaha Jr. Lancers finished the season with one of the best season record in IHSHL history at 32-1. Noteworthy indeed! Kudos to all! On the volunteer front; our dedicated group of unpaid helpers continue to work diligently to attend to all of our team's needs. I don't need to remind you that without their unselfish efforts this league would quickly cease to exist. Therefore, I encourage each of you to shake the hand of your nearest volunteer and express your appreciation for their hard work. As always, we pay special consideration to our senior players and their parents in their final season. It is my sincere hope that this year will create rewarding and unforgettable memories for you all to cherish for the years to come. In closing I would like to remind all our players that successfully harmonizing academic and athletic achievement are the keys to success in your future. To paraphrase a Lou Holtz quote, "Ability may be what you're capable of doing, motivation may determine what you do, but it is your attitude that determines how well you do it." A determined attitude in balancing your hockey and schoolwork will serve you well for future success. On behalf of the league's officers and directors, we wish each team and their members the best for the season. Sincerely, Shawn L. Spencer President, IHSHL |
