Jr. Lancers trim Metros in battle for fifth place

URBANDALE, Iowa - The Omaha Jr. Lancers scored two goals in each period Sunday and handed the Sioux City Metros a 6-2 setback in the fifth-place game of the Iowa High School Hockey League tournament here.

The setback concluded a 21-10-1-1 season for Metros. who entered the tournament as the fourth seed after winning last year’s state championship.

Omaha’s Matt Talmon and Jacob Braun scored in the first period, but Metros tied it with a goal by Chase Peterson at 14:39 of the first period and another red-lighter by Alex Lukehart at 2:23 of the third period.

Eric Hoffmeyer started in goal for the Metros, but was lifted in favor of Beau Erickson after Omaha’s Dan Long and Tim Smith scored at 6:36 and 10:46 of the second period.

Smith then added two goals in the third, period to earn his three-goal hat trick. Only three penalties were whistled in the contest.
